Getting Started

Infra Range is a mobile infrared dry-fire training system. It uses the rear camera of a compatible smartphone to detect infrared laser hits on a projected image, turning a projector and screen into an interactive home training range.

A typical setup requires a compatible iPhone or Android phone, a projector, a projector screen or flat light-colored wall, a stable phone mount or tripod, the Infra Range infrared lens filter, and a compatible infrared dry-fire training laser.

Depending on your phone and projector, you may also need an HDMI cable and the appropriate phone adapter.

Yes. Infra Range is designed to use a projector to create a large interactive training area. The app can run on the phone by itself, but a projector is required for the full Infra Range experience.

The phone’s rear camera watches the projected screen while the app is running. When a compatible infrared laser strikes the screen, Infra Range detects the light and records the location as a shot.

Device and Hardware Compatibility

Infra Range works with many modern iOS and Android smartphones. Camera performance varies by device, and phones with higher camera frame rates generally provide the best shot detection.

Infra Range is optimized for infrared lasers operating around 780 nm. Lasers using substantially different wavelengths, including many 850 nm products, may not be detected reliably and are not recommended.

Infra Range may be used with a compatible dry-fire laser cartridge or training device, but the firearm must be completely unloaded and no live ammunition should be present in the training area.

Always follow the safety instructions provided by the firearm and laser-device manufacturers.

Most modern projectors can work with Infra Range. A clear, focused image with good brightness and contrast is more important than any specific brand.

A 1080p projector can provide a sharper image, but proper positioning, focus, room lighting, and screen visibility have a greater effect on detection performance.

A flat, matte projector screen or smooth, light-colored wall works best. Avoid glossy surfaces, mirrors, severe wrinkles, curved screens, or reflective materials that may distort the image or create glare.

The filter must completely cover the rear camera lens being used by Infra Range. On phones with multiple camera lenses, make sure the active camera is fully covered and that no visible light is leaking around the filter.

Calibration and Setup

Mount the phone securely with its rear camera facing the projected screen. The entire projected Infra Range image, including all four edges, should be visible in the camera view.

Do not move the phone after calibration.

Camera calibration identifies the four edges of the projected image and corrects the camera’s viewing angle. This allows Infra Range to accurately translate a detected laser hit into the correct location inside the app.

Make sure the entire projected image is visible and none of the edges are cut off. The screen should be flat, rectangular, and clearly separated from the surrounding wall.

Reducing glare, improving focus, and increasing contrast may also help. When automatic calibration cannot find the screen, use the manual calibration option and position the four corner markers yourself.

Recalibrate whenever the phone, tripod, projector, or screen is moved. You should also recalibrate if shots appear offset, the screen boundaries no longer line up, or the phone changes orientation.

Laser calibration, sometimes called zeroing, aligns the detected laser position with your point of aim. Follow the instructions inside the app and fire the required calibration shots at the center target.

Not necessarily. Laser calibration can usually be reused as long as the phone, projector, screen, and training laser remain in the same positions.

Recalibrate when equipment is moved or when detected shots appear consistently offset from the point of aim.

The projected image should fill as much of the camera view as possible, but all four edges must remain visible. If part of the image is clipped, calibration and shot placement may be inaccurate.

No. Moving or bumping the phone changes the camera’s relationship to the projected screen and may cause inaccurate shot placement. Use a stable tripod or mount and recalibrate after any movement.

Lighting and Detection

Infra Range performs best in a dim or dark room. After the infrared lens filter is installed, the projected image should appear almost completely black through the phone’s camera.

If visible light is still passing through the filter, the room may be too bright and the app may register false shots.

Outdoor use is not recommended. Sunlight contains a large amount of infrared light and can overwhelm the phone’s camera, causing false detections or preventing the training laser from being detected.

False shots are usually caused by excessive room light, sunlight, reflections, light leaking around the infrared filter, projector glare, phone movement, or sensitivity being set too high.

Dim the room, check the filter placement, reduce reflective surfaces, confirm that the phone is stable, and lower the sensitivity if necessary.

Missed shots may be caused by an incompatible or weak infrared laser, incorrect filter placement, sensitivity being too low, poor calibration, excessive distance from the screen, or the phone camera not seeing the entire projected image.

Test the laser in all four corners of the screen and adjust the sensitivity gradually.

Begin near the default sensitivity and fire test shots near the center and all four corners of the projected image.

Increase the sensitivity only when legitimate shots are being missed. Lower it when the app detects flashes, reflections, or other light as shots.

Inaccurate shot placement usually means the phone, projector, or screen moved after calibration, or the four calibration corners were not positioned correctly.

Reset the camera calibration, confirm that all four edges are visible, and repeat the laser-calibration process.

The projected image may not be fully visible to the camera, the infrared filter may partially block the active lens, or sensitivity may be too low.

Check all four corners during setup and make sure the camera has an unobstructed view of the complete projected image.

Features and Operation

Home Screen Shot Detection allows you to select supported menu buttons by firing the infrared laser at them. This reduces the need to touch or move the phone after calibration.

Infra Range includes practice activities, accuracy challenges, interactive targets, and other dry-fire training scenarios. Available activities may change as new app updates are released.

Yes. Compatible infrared laser hits are detected by the phone camera and processed by the app as they occur.

Infrared laser light may be invisible to the human eye. Never look directly into an infrared laser or intentionally aim it at another person or animal.
